Mount Victoria Parterre Garden

Designed in response to the renovation of an existing three storey dwelling on the site, this harbour side terrace is viewed largely from above. A central pond separates a cantilevered concrete walkway and a contemporary parterre which mixes clipped hedges for structure, native grasses and mosses for texture, and monochromatic floral planting for seasonal colour. A staggered hedge of Italian Cypress on the southern boundary provides screening from the neighbouring building while not adversely affecting light penetration. An aluminium, timber and woven-wire pergola provides shelter and privacy on the northern boundary and a splash of colour from the bougainvillea climbing over it. The finished garden received an award for outstanding design from the New Zealand institute of Landscape Architects and was featured twice in Home NZ magazine.
