Cuba Street and Glover Park

Completed in December 2022, the upgrade of Swan Lane and Garrett Street in central Wellington for Wellington City Council acts to improve east-west mid-block connectivity in this portion of Cuba Street. The design of Swan Lane acts to improve the amenity, quality and function of the streets, encouraging ground level pedestrian activity and supporting surrounding businesses. The upgrade of Swan Lane and Garrett Street also contributes to the green space in Wellington’s inner city and supports city resilience through implementation of water sensitive design solutions - 2 significant raingardens on Garrett Street collect and treat surface water from the north-west portion of Cuba Street and half the catchment of Garrett Street. The works include raised concrete tables on Cuba Street and midway along Garrett Street into Glover Park, new stone and concrete surfacing, the narrowing of Cuba Street carriageway, with new garden beds at crossings, new tree and garden bed planting along the streets, as well as new event power, street and feature lighting. The new stone paving acts as a canvas for a public artwork Shadow Windows by Wellington artist Andrew Beck, which traces architectural remnants of the street’s current and former historical buildings on the street surface.
