Te Whare Mara

Completed in 2020, the Garden House takes inspiration from the Webb Street Garden which caught the attention of the client. The layered courtyard provides a sheltered and private centrepiece around which the house is wrapped to provide pleasant views from its most important spaces. Stepped steel, concrete and timber elements navigate the hilly site to provide a consistent but flexible aesthetic which is able to respond to the various needs of each space. The boundary treatments were carefully considered to blend in with the “borrowed landscape” beyond or screen unwanted views as required. The project won the residential category at the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects national awards in 2022 as well as awards with the New Zealand Institute of Architects and the Master Builders Association of New Zealand.
